Ventura Saltillo Cleaning, Polishing & Sealing
Saltillo tiles are handmade clay floor tiles made in Saltillo, Mexico. They're available in a wide range of warm, earthy colors. Since Saltillo tiles are unglazed and porous, they can absorb any water or cleaners they come in contact with. Natural products such as vinegar clean gently yet effectively without the harsh fumes and toxicity of chemical cleaners. Clean your Saltillo tile floor weekly to keep it looking its best.
Even a properly sealed Mexican Tile eventually acquires layers of soil from foot traffic and frequent spills. Where the sealer has worn away or was never applied, the porous tile holds the dirt deeper than normal household cleaners and mops can reach. Dirt and stains are ground into waxes and acrylic coatings. The one big downside to Terra-Cotta tiles is that they have no glaze on the surface and can soil deeply dirt very quickly. The answer of course, is to seal them.

SALTILLO
- Is sometimes referred to Mexican pavers or tile. It is originally from Mexico but now also made in Italy.
- Is extremely absorbent which means they are not only porous but also very versatile and can be colored, sealed and finished in a large variety of ways.
- Comes unglazed and must be properly sealed and maintained. It is usually sealed upon installation but this sealant will wear off and the tile will then begin to crack, chip and become stain-prone.
- Solvent-based strippers are used to strip the tile before it can be resealed. For the average sized room, this can take anywhere from about 3 to 5 hours.
